Overhaulin
I am what you call “a petrol head,” in that I love anything with a motor in it, and especially if it has lots of horsepower, so after I saw a program of this name, a spiritual thought germinated and grew, so here it is for you. The old car was still in the back of the shed and still covered with a very dusty cloth, between family, work commitments and a lack of funds, it sat there for “another day” when what was currently seen would be totally transformed into something that was pretty clear in his mind, as he had run the various options over in his mind until he knew exactly what it would be like and what it would look like.
On this particular TV show, people write in and they pick a project, and with insider help, they take the car and then prank the owner with teasing phone calls until the last call gets them into a situation where all is revealed and the transformation is revealed and the keys and ownership is then handed back to an overjoyed owner. Chip Foose, who is an amazing designer and car builder, gets the family to sit with him to pick their brains about what concepts have been shared, and then in moments draws out the finished car in amazingly accurate detail, with the plan in clear pictorial drawing, the deconstruction begins and the vehicle is stripped to nothing, media blasted to remove all paint and filler and brought back to the workshop.
The team then get to work removing rust, straightening the body and all the panels, installing new panels were necessary, and in one episode, they even cut off the roof to make a convertible. New modern suspension and brakes are fitted, new motors and gearboxes and drive line, and the list goes on. The seats are rebuilt or replaced, new carpets and trim, the body is perfected and painted, and the shiny chrome is all fitted or re-fitted, new glass and mouldings, and when it is re-assembled, and polished, there you now have an “Award winning Show Car” and little which resembles the original start point, but it is still the same car, just that it has now had an amazing transformation and make-over, and you certainly want this one and not the original, and on top of this, Chip Foose has invariably personalized it to the unique wishes of the owner, it is now “a One Off.”
Now for the spiritual connection. We are all much like the old car in the program, we all carry the battle scars of neglect, trauma and abuse, long years of toil, some of the scars are patched up, or covered over, much like the car, with filler and stuff and painted over, but deep down, the damage is hidden from unknowing eyes, but it is deep down under the “I’m Fine” glossy exterior. If we but come to Jesus Christ and give him the “Total Rights to Overhaul” then he starts his wonders and the scary bits start, we get the strip down and rebuild and then this verse in scripture becomes a reality, 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit get to work on you, to re-make you back into the image of God as per his original wonderful plan for you and your life. God does not have a big machine to stamp out duplicates, his plan for you is unique and special, very personalized, and there is only ever, one only, of you anywhere in the Universe, for you are the only one ever, special and unique. We have this encouragement as found in this verse, Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Or “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:48.

Quote; “God’s ideal for His children is higher than the highest human thought can reach.” “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” This command is a promise. The plan of redemption contemplates our complete recovery from the power of Satan. Christ always separates the contrite soul from sin. He came to destroy the works of the devil, and He has made provision that the Holy Spirit shall be imparted to every repentant soul, to keep him from sinning.” {DA 311}
