Leeks, Garlic and Onions
Numbers 11:4-6 “And the mixed multitude that [was] among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic: But now our soul [is] dried away: [there is] nothing at all, beside this manna, [before] our eyes.” Psalm 11:5-7 “The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: [this shall be] the portion of their cup. For the righteous, our LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.” Genesis 19:24 “Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; and he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.”
They tell us that leeks and garlic and onions, are all of a family of products that are abundant in Sulphur, and Sulphur is often a favorite preservative for most preserved and processed foods. Now Sulphur is a very large atom, and was once used to stiffen up rubber, and this then made a solid object, often used to make fountain pens and the like, and that is, before we got into plastics. Sulphur is often still used in vehicle tyre production, to make them harder and more wear resistant as well. Sulphur or Brimstone, was also the fire balls that rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah, incinerating everything, and turning buildings and everything to ashes. Even today, if you visit the site, you can still pick up great quantities of these small golf ball sized Sulphur balls, just put a small amount into the fire, and you will stink the house out. The gardener, when gravely afflicted with mould and fungus and other similar destructive diseases, will often turn to a bottle of ‘Lime Sulphur,’ and out with the sprayer, and gone is the diseases, that once were decimating his Orchard.
Quote; “God continued to feed the Hebrew host with the bread rained from heaven; but they were not satisfied. Their depraved appetite craved meat, which God in His wisdom had withheld, in a great measure, from them. “And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting; and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely, the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic. But now our soul is dried away. There is nothing at all besides this manna before our eyes.” They became weary of the food prepared for them by angels, and sent to them directly from heaven. They knew it was just the food God wished them to have, and that it was healthful for them and their children. Notwithstanding their hardships in the wilderness, there was not a feeble one in all their tribes. Satan, the author of disease and misery, will approach God’s people where he can have the greatest success. He has controlled the appetite in a great measure from the time of his successful experiment with Eve, in leading her to eat the forbidden fruit. He came with his temptations first to the mixed multitude, the believing Egyptians, and stirred them up to seditious murmurings. They would not be content with the healthful food which God had provided for them. Their depraved appetites craved a greater variety, especially flesh-meats. {TSDF 63}
Quote; “”And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord; and the Lord heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp, and the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire was quenched. And he called the name of the place Taberah, because the fire of the Lord burnt among them. And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting, and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish we did eat in Egypt so freely; and the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic. But now our soul is dried away; and there is nothing at all besides this manna before our eyes.” {SpM 45} Say, what is the bet that this fire was also Sulphur Fire?
In conclusion, back to the start, Numbers 11:4-5 “And the mixed multitude that [was] among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic:” Egypt is synonymous with Sin, along with this whole sinful world, do we therefore lust after sin, are comfortable in sin, do we also want to go back to Egypt and back into captivity to sin? They had cultivated a depraved appetite, so how Heavenly is your appetite today? If you were instantly transported into the purity of Heaven, what are your ‘leeks and garlic and onions,’ that you will still lust after, to longingly desire, to pine after and to weep for, what is that earthly useless thing that will sway your mind from Heavenly, down to Earthly things? Hebrews 12:1-2 JB Phillips “Surrounded then as we are by these serried ranks of witnesses, let us strip off everything that hinders us, as well as the sin which dogs our feet, and let us run the race that we have to run with patience, our eyes fixed on Jesus the source and the goal of our faith.” May we feast daily on the Manna of Heaven, and find this is really true, “And the things of Earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of his Glory and Grace.” Sulphur and Treacle, or Brimstone and Treacle was administered long ago as the miracle cure all, for ‘Spring Fever,’ did it actually heal or harm, well, we will let others comment on this point. The point to ponder from all this, is this point; “What are the Flesh Pots of Egypt, those leeks and garlic and onions,” that has corrupted your heavenly appetite so badly, that you desiringly lust to return to sin, and back into slavery in Egypt and sin, and thus choose to be far away from God, God wants you to repent, and to come back home to him, so will you; what then are those, ‘Leeks and Garlic and Onions’ in your life??
