How could I ever sin against God
Our title and study comes from the story of Joseph. Joseph had a very close relationship with God, so God revealed certain matters to him, about his future, and when he shared, the family were not very supportive, his father had also made him a regal coat, evidence of his very special position as being next to his father, his brothers therefore could not accept this, so they took the opportunity one day to sell him off to some traders for 20 pieces of silver [Gen 37:28] and they then sold Joseph to Potiphar for what I suspect was “30 Pieces of Silver” as there are loads of Christ-like linking between Jesus and Joseph, for Jesus was also sold for “30 Pieces of Silver,” [Matt 26:15.] It appears that Potiphar was what we could call a “Prison Warden,” and his house appears to be at the front, and the prison cells were in a wing connected and behind it, so Joseph became the jailer among his other duties, and was most familiar with all that transpired as he was responsible for the care and feeding of the prisoners held incarcerated there, but as a recent prisoner himself, he knew from firsthand experience what that felt like, and he was soon to be locked away in his own jail for a few years.
Misses Potiphar appears to have had a long string of liaisons, fancied a change once more, and there was a strapping hunk right handy there in the house, and then this transpired, Genesis 39:7-9 “And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what [is] with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; [There is] none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back anything from me but thee, because thou [art] his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” Joseph stood right next in power to Potiphar, redeemed Christians stand right next to Jesus, Revelation 20:4 “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”
Now Joseph had a choice, to “Live in the Flesh or to Live in the Spirit,” so he chose God over anything that could possibly jeopardize such a close and special relationship. 1 Corinthians 6:18 “Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.” Now “Fornication” is porneia (in Greek), or “Pornography,” but the (Hebrew) puts a wide spin on it with this definition, “That which should not ought to be.” Joseph declared allegiance to God “how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” Paul in his epistle to the church in Corinth, gets very personal, “but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.” Genesis 2:24 “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” The Bible does not condone the mixing of “Flesh” or seed in agriculture. Leviticus 19:19 “Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.” So why should we vainly attempt to mix “Flesh and Spirit” or “Light with Darkness,” it never does work, Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” “How could I ever sin against God?”
Quote; “Death before dishonor or the transgression of God’s law should be the motto of every Christian. As a people professing to be reformers, treasuring the most solemn, purifying truths of God’s word, we must elevate the standard far higher than it is at the present time. Sin and sinners in the church must be promptly dealt with, that others may not be contaminated. Truth and purity require that we make more thorough work to cleanse the camp from Achans. Let those in responsible positions not suffer sin in a brother. Show him that he must either put away his sins or be separated from the church.” {CCh 109}. A “Martyr” is a martyr because they refuse to contaminate their soul with anything that defiles, and death before dishonor is preferable than to deny their Saviour, to deny his offer of Salvation, to let the side down, so they stand, Ephesians 6:13 “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” The humorist once said; “If you do not stand for something, then you will probably fall for everything,” so what do you stand for, and would you die before you dishonor and let God’s team down?
Quote; “The greatest want of the world is the want of men,–men who will not be bought or sold; men who in their inmost souls are true and honest; men who do not fear to call sin by its right name; men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole; men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall. {Ed 57} Then “Why would I ever sin against God?”
Romans 6:16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which [temple] ye are.” 1 Corinthians 6:15-20 “Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ, and make [them] the members of an harlot? God forbid. What? Know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? For two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 2 Corinthians 6:14 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness?” So, “How could I ever sin against God?” He is so special to me, and I love him above all else, even life itself. John 8:11 “She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” “How could I ever sin against God?”
