Why Curse?
Let us dissect this verse and find a depth that is often missed, Luke 6:28 “Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” So on face value, this looks fine, it admonishes us that should somebody come at us from “The Dark Side” in curses or negativity, we are admonished to stay with Jesus Christ on “The Light Side” and to Bless them, to be a blessing unto them. Now “Curse” is Strongs [2672] and is “to doom – to curse.” Now Strongs [2672] comes from Strongs [2671] which is “Imprecation” (Formal a Curse) or “Execration” (to feel and express loathing and hatred of someone or something.) This then leads us back to Strongs [2596] “after, against, pertaining to, touching, to the charge of, down.”
Now to ramp this up a wee bit, 1 John 4:20 MSG “If anyone boasts, “I love God,” and goes right on hating his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won’t love the person he can see, how can he love God he can’t see? The commandment we have from Christ is blunt: Loving God includes loving people. You’ve got to love both.” Let us modify this verse with what we have just leant; 1 John 4:20 {Adapted} “If a man say, I love God, and curseth his brother by Gossiping, undermining his character, slandering, sowing doubts, by expressing negative feelings or by expressing loathing, by thoughts or words of discontent or hatred, he is therefore a liar: for how can he ever claim he loves God whom he has never seen? But he that claims he loveth his brother proves this by always speaking kindly of, to and about his brother whom he hath seen, this proves that he loveth and serveth the Unseen God, for he uplifts and cares about his neighbour, he loves both God and his neighbour as Christ requires.”
James 3:12 MSG “My Friends, this can’t go on. A spring doesn’t gush fresh water one day and brackish the next, does it? Apple trees don’t bear strawberries do they? Raspberry bushes don’t bear apples, do they? You’re not going to dip into a polluted mud hole and get a cup of clear cool water, are you?” Matthew 12:30 “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.” Jesus here reminds us that we can only be one sided, if we are not whole heartedly, actively living like Jesus Christ, then we are none of his and belong wholly to “the Dark Side.” We just cannot have “Blessings” and “Cursing’s” in the same person, we are either wholly Gods, or we are absolutely none of his at all.
James 4:17 MSG “As it is, you are full of your grandiose selves. All such vaunting self-importance is evil. In fact, if you know the right thing to do and don’t do that, for you, it is evil.” We all know that gossip and evil thinking are not “Godly and uplifting” and this verse plays it fully, to gossip or think unkind thoughts about anyone, firstly you have to let go of God, you now have seeds of discontent, and if ever sown then they will make a frightful harvest. Quote; “All in whose hearts selfishness is cherished will listen to the temptations of Satan, and will act the part of the unfaithful, slothful servant. They will hide their entrusted treasure, neglecting to use their talents for the Lord. All such can reap only as they have sown. They have sown sparingly, or not at all, and they will reap sparingly. But although the Lord has told them this in words too plain to be honestly misconstrued, they cherish dissatisfaction in their hearts, and complain that the Lord is a hard master; that they are dealt hardly and unjustly with. By this they sow in other minds the seeds of discontent and unbelief. Becoming agents of the enemy, by precept and example they lead others to neglect to obey God. Disaffection is sown, to yield a harvest of disaffection.” {RH 5/1/1897}
So why do we so easily fall into the trap of speaking or thinking unkindly of our neighbour, whether friend, family or stranger, emitting from our inner spring salty and deathly issues, and then got to Church, or try to Witness, and from our same mouth try to flow out to others that heavenly water of life and salvation. James 3:12 advises us that this is an impossibility, Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” We claim to live for Jesus Christ, redeemed by his blood, and out of our mouths flows curses, salty water, fleshly things, when a Christian Believer should always be a blessing to all about them as a constant spring of the pure “Living Water of Life” as they are constantly living by the Spirit and are a constant Blessing, and never fleshly and a curse, so why do we so often live a curse? Strongs [2671] “Execration” (to feel and express loathing and hatred of someone or something.)
Back to this verse; 1 John 4:20 MSG “If anyone boasts, “I love God,” and goes right on hating his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won’t love the person he can see, how can he love God whom he can’t see? The commandment we have from Christ is blunt: Loving God includes loving people. You’ve got to love both.” John 14:15 MSG “If you love me, show it by doing what I’ve told you to do.” Strongs [2671] “Execration” (to feel and express loathing and hatred of someone or something.) So are you living a godly life in full obedience to God, or are you bad mouthing and really are a living curse?
